The Washington Monument History

A monument to commemorate the works of the former president of the United States, the Washington monument was constructed in memory of George Washington. Designed by Architect Robert Mills, this tall white monument was established on January 31, 1848 and opened to public on October 9, 1888.  It was officially the tallest structure in the world not until Eiffel Tower was finished. Still, this monument is the tallest obelisk in the world with a height of 555 feet and 5.5 inches.
