The Smithsonian Craft Show was founded in the year 1966 and presents the exhibition and sale of contemporary American crafts. The show is produced annually by Smithsonian Women's Committee to benefit educational, outreach, and research projects within the Smithsonian Institution.

Three jurors, experts in the field of American crafts and newly selected each year, choose 120 artists from a large number of applicants. The Craft Show features 120 master craftsmen and emerging talents working in diverse media including basketry, ceramics, decorative fiber, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media, paper, wearable art and wood. Objects range from functional to decorative and from whimsical to wearable.

Recent technological innovations have increased the Craft Show's breadth and efficiency. An Online Auction has transformed the Silent Auction into a nationwide opportunity to bid on and acquire fine crafts and other desirable items online as well as the Craft Show.
