The Caribbean Carnival was initiated in the year 1993 and is an annual affair. It draws 300,000 spectators and is the most popular event. The Carnival features a parade with floats representing the island nations, with Caribbean citizens performing traditional dance, wearing cultural garments, and displaying their nation's flags: Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Haiti, Puerto Rico, etc.
Steel bands provide festive music as they march along, and local Caribbean acts are scheduled throughout the festival. The carnival also includes a food court, highlighting everything from traditional Caribbean fare to Chinese and American food, including roti, curry chicken, jerk chicken, Palau, red beans, rice, and shark. The Caribbean Carnival is the fastest growing carnival in North America, and is a fun time for everyone.
The purpose of this event is to develop and encourage cross- cultural programs within the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area community in the expansion of Caribbean culture, and to educate youths and adults in Caribbean arts, crafts and culture.
