Started in the year 1975, Capital Pride is a nine day festival and is the fourth largest gay pride event in the United States. The main focus is on diversity, cultural achievement, civil rights issues and entertainment by and for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender individuals, families, and friends.
Run by volunteers, funded by corporate and individual donations, and overseen by the Whitman- Walker Clinic, the festival has the dual purpose of education and celebration, for the gay community itself and for the entire metro area.
In addition to the political speeches and HIV- information booths, you can also sign up for a beauty contest (male and female) and scream your heart out at a parade. Highlights of the weeklong event include the Capital Pride Town Hall Meeting; Mr. and Miss Capital Pride Pageant; Capital Pride Parade and the Capital Pride Street Festival. There are also drag contests, film screenings and, of course, parties. More than 200,000 visitors turn out for the events.
The biggest celebration of gay and lesbian identities in the city, the annual Capital Pride is a week- long event that is open to everyone. The Pride includes educational, civic and social events, but the highlights of the celebrations is the parade and street festival, which take place in the city on the final weekend of Pride week.
