Very near to Georgetown University, The Tombs shares its property with 1789 Restaurant, and F. Scott's, an artistically decorated restaurant, which is now a good caterer for private parties and special events. The Tombs is situated on the corner of 36th and Prospect Streets. The three restaurants were founded in 1960 by a dedicated entrepreneur of Georgetown, Richard McCooey.

Mr. McCooey consolidated various properties, created a basement. The basement area became The Tombs, and the upstairs area was turned into 1789 Restaurant. These two restaurants were opened for public in the summer of 1962. The name ‘The Tombs' is taken from T.S. Eliot's poem Bustopher Jones: The Cat About Town.Clyde's Restaurant Group purchased and modified these restaurants in 1985.

The Tomb has the typical look of a great sporting saloon with vintage leaded glass and high- backed booths. The crew, the sporting prints match perfectly with the University's architecture.

The Tombs is associated with Clyde's Farm Program, and it takes fresh and seasonal ingredients from local farms in Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland. The Tombs also utilizes the products, wines and services from its upstairs neighbor 1789 Restaurant. This way it provides desserts to its guests from Pastry Chef Zoe Behrens.
